Employment and Skilling: Challenges & Opportunities in the Gems and Jewellery sector

India’s Gems and Jewellery (G&J) sector is one of the fastest-growing sectors, mostly export-oriented and labour intensive, contributing around 7% to the country’s GDP and 15% to India’s total merchandise export. Employing more than 5 million people currently, it is expected to reach 8.23 million by 2022.India exports more than 75% of the world’s polished diamond, gems and jewellery, contributing to the country's foreign exchange earnings.

Indian craftsmanship is well recognised in the global market. However, in the backdrop of increasing buyer inclination towards custom- and machine-made jewellery requiring skill upgradation using new technologies, they need to acquire certifications for the new skills, while retaining their traditional expertise to remain globally relevant. The unorganized and fragmented nature of the industry has made it difficult to retain talent and attract new talent to the sector. Further, the younger generation prefer to work in other services instead of becoming craftsmen. All these lead to critical skill challenges affecting the growth of the sector.

Driving national growth through recognizing the inherent strengths of this sector in terms of its employability potential, enhancing the skill levels of the craftsmen, commensuration with the skill requirement of the domestic industry as well as global market is the need of the hour.

In an effort to deliberate on these and move towards actionable solutions, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) is organising a virtual conference on “Employment and Skilling: Challenges & Opportunities in the Gems and Jewellery sector” on Monday, 6 December 2021.
