Organizations worldwide are working towards achievement of United Nations Sustainability Development Goals. Climate change initiatives are becoming prominent as awareness among Industry, Governments and Users continue to improve. Large logistics service providers have initiated actions to move towards cleaner and greener logistics. These include all modes of transportation, storage, packaging, and handling services. However, the progression towards sustainable and resilient logistics systems has inherent challenges for the present and the future.
Risks are inevitable in logistics. While the impact of pandemic is fast receding, relative importance of risk and resilience in logistics systems is now pointing to responses for geopolitical dynamics. The logistics sector has a prominent role to play in the success of risk management frameworks being established in macro and micro economic scenarios. At macro level responses are in the form of accelerated logistics infrastructure projects, deliberations on alternative sources of energy for logistics such as blended fuels, battery operated vehicles and hydrogen fuel. At micro level, logistics service providers and users are demonstrating increasing awareness of sustainability goals in logistics service providers, introducing novel talent management practices and assessing emerging technologies for cargo visibility.
Present challenges include availability of talent at all the levels of management in logistics sector. This problem has become more acute after pandemic. New talent management models must be evolved to attract and retain talent for the future. Clean logistics technologies, digital ecosystems and green warehouses hold key for success of sustainability goals. The pace of change is also constrained by talent readiness.
